Rammed earth defines function and form. Two massive rammed earth volumes incorporate four different shades of indigenous soil, creating a deep luscious palette in irregular sedimentary layers. They are much the same soils and hues found in nearby Abiquiu that inspired artist Georgia O’Keefe.

SGB, What's your dream project?

"A winery.
A distillery.
... definately a winery or a distillery.

... or working in Austin.
Maybe a winery or distillery in Austin."

This project was located on an absolutely stunning  site overlooking California vineyards and the mountains beyond. We were influenced by the light and shadows on the mountains and those patterns are reflected in the continuous lift pattern on the Rammed Earth.
"Never in my life would I imagine myself just sitting down ...to stare at a wall for so long, as I just did." - Project Owner

SGB, is it true that you came 'out of retirement' to work on these projects?

"Mike Sims, unsurpassed in his talent for creations in rammed earth, was not available when I first started (new home build).

Time, circumstances, and one delay after another, brought the first miracle. Mike had time. He was here.

We made an agreement. He got started, years and years ago. Every craftsman that followed him saw excellence in his work. Inimitable.

His work informed everything that followed."

While the exterior of the home features rugged materials intended to convey a sense of shelter from the harsh wind and sun, the interior conveys a sense of sanctuary. Wood structure and detailing, combined with rammed earth and earthen plaster finishes create a sense of warmth and welcoming. The home's materials create ever-changing light qualities through the various seasons and times of day.

Inspired by thickened stone walls of Chaco Canyon and the regional geology the La Tierra Nueva home is influenced by the vernacular architecture of Santa Fe and northern NM. Rammed earth walls, analogous to historic mud plastered adobe walls, ..., match the coloring of the site soil. - Studio GP LLC / Architect

Architect Efthimios Manitis of STUDIOeM design calls them (the Rammed Earth walls) the amalgam of "modern contemporary regionalism" governed by Roger's strict mandate for minimalism. Within that aesthetic, Maniatis packaged eco-friendly features around the thermal properties of the rammed earth walls... subtly varying color and texture (to create lifts of color and a) lovely strata. "The colors change all day with the light" the architect says.  - Charles C. Poling, Dwell Magazine
